Motorcycle Center Stand
Motorcycle Center Stand
A motorcycle center stand, also known as a center stand or main stand, is a mechanical device attached to a motorcycle's frame that allows the bike to be lifted and supported in an upright position when not in use. Unlike the side stand (kickstand), which supports the motorcycle on one side, the center stand provides stability by lifting both of the motorcycle's wheels off the ground simultaneously.
The primary purposes of a motorcycle center stand include:
-
Parking: It allows the rider to park the motorcycle in an upright position, which can be useful in tight parking spaces, for maintenance, or when storing the bike for an extended period. This helps prevent flat spots on the tires and reduces the risk of damage from tipping over.
-
Maintenance: A center stand makes it easier to perform maintenance tasks on the motorcycle, such as cleaning, oil changes, chain lubrication, and tire maintenance, as both wheels are elevated, providing better access.
-
Security: When parked on a center stand, the motorcycle is less susceptible to being pushed or knocked over, which can deter theft or accidental damage.
Center stands are commonly found on many touring, adventure, and cruiser-style motorcycles, although not all motorcycles come equipped with them. Some riders may choose to install aftermarket center stands on their motorcycles if they are not already included as standard equipment.
